The "information age" is all very well, but finding what you need can be a chore.

We thought it might be useful to list some of the resources we regularly use.

The aim is the "basics" avoiding overload.  If you need a comprehensive HR information resource, go to the Nottingham Business School.

Employment law & related topics

Our start point for basic information is the DTI.  Start with their site map of ER issues - http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/sitemap/sitemap.htm

And then ACAS - http://www.acas.org.uk/ Their index is here.

For general employment law information,
James Birkin is very useful and free.

By far the best HR resource for research on employment law is "emplaw", but it is not free - although they have a free trial facility.  If we are investigating an unusual or ambiguous law problem, this is where we go.  Looking through EAT judgements can also be useful - unless of course they were overturned by the CA or ECJ.  But if your problem is at that cutting edge of employment law, probably best engage a lawyer!

Our "thank you" award for an employment law resource that combines substance with "free" goes to Simmons & Simmons - their "Elexica" site is first rate.

The CIPD website - if you are a member - can be useful for researching articles, although the employment law section is not too detailed.

Of course the EOC, CRE Age Positive, Employers Forum On Age  and  Disability Rights Commission are essential sites for those subjects.

General HR information

The CIPD and Personnel Today web sites are invaluable.  Note that the CIPD have research papers that are brilliant, if hidden away.

Personnel Today  & follow "resources" can be very helpful and the "directory of suppliers" ideal for tracking down niche advisors.

If you are in local government then the Employer's Organisation is essential - and very useful for everyone in HR.

Recruitment

Internet: The proliferation of general jobs boards and niche recruitment web sites can be a nightmare to understand.  There is an excellent site UK Recruiter which really does help find your way through this field.

Interim management - start with the The Interim Management Association
